Guide to Toxic Oral Habits

Do you or your child have a toxic oral habit you are looking to eliminate? Correct oral posture can not be achieved with an object in the mouth. Anything in the mouth for a prolonged period of time will create a tongue thrust or a swallow adaptation.

Using Myofunctional Therapy we design a habit elimination plan and work with both parent and child on eliminating their habit. We also work with proper tongue positioning to not delay further facial development.

Common facial and mouth features noted with toxic oral habits are open bites, high decay rates, chipped or broken teeth, high narrow palates, mouth breathing, and underdeveloped upper and lower jaws.

Toxic Oral Habit examples:

Thumb or digit sucking
Nail biting
Lip licking
Lip sucking or chewing
Chewing on objects such as pens, shirts, etc
Prolonged pacifier use
SleepDisorders List

Toxic oral habits can cause temporary or permanent harm to dental occlusion if not stopped. We use a variety of engaging and interactive activities to help terminate toxic oral habits for both children and adults. Toxic oral habits can be detrimental to development and growth.

Myofunctional Therapy will work on proper tongue placement and lip seal, to ensure nasal breathing, and habit elimination.
