Orthodontic relapse is often a contributing factor to the teeth shifting out of alignment due to the force or pressure of one’s incorrect tongue resting posture. Underdeveloped jaws and recessed lower jaws are two contributing factors leading to incorrect oral resting posture. Myofunctional therapy can help.
Why are we concerned with the proper alignment of jaw structure?
If we see underdeveloped jaws in children/adults it leads to an increased chance of oxygen disruption to their brain. This can affect all aspects of living. Decreased oxygen will produce an increase in sleepiness, ADHD symptoms, snoring, poor academics, difficulty in speaking, and many more negative side effects.
Early orthodontic treatment can help prevent more severe dental problems by providing room for crowded and erupting teeth. Orthodontic treatment can correct the alignment of the teeth and bite with significant long-term benefits. Dramatic improvement in breathing, sleeping, snoring, can be seen in children and adults who visit with an airway focused orthodontist. Better muscle function and balance will help direct teeth into their proper locations.
Did you know that underdeveloped jaws, crowded or crooked teeth, crossbite, underbite, or overbite, and recessed lower jaw, are all signs of an underlying development issue?
This is why we encourage early intervention if any of the above are recognized in children. We see the eruption of teeth between the ages of six and seven. It is best to consult with an airway orthodontist between the ages of 6-9. This is a very important time in the stage of development and growth. Early intervention creates proper muscle habits to form.
Are you an adult who has had orthodontic treatment and feels your teeth are going back to what they looked like previously to having orthodontics? Orthodontic relapse is often a contributing factor to the teeth shifting out of alignment due to the tongue’s pressure and incorrect tongue resting posture.
What about the pressure of your tongue on your front teeth causing your teeth to have an open bite? Does your tongue press on your teeth each time you swallow?
